Scheduled Ancient Monument Mg209(POW)

NGR :- SH89840040 (SH80SE)
Unitary authority :- Powys

Cairn some 14.5m east-west by 13.0m north-south and 0.7m high. It is composed of flaggy sandstone blocks within a kerb setting, 1.0m wide and upto 0.8m high (CPAT, 1987). Some 9.0m in diameter with 14 stones of which 12 are probably in situ (OS, 1977). It is disturbed on the east side with a 0.3m square dry stone, possible grouse butt built into the northeast quadrant (CPAT, 1987). Some modern dumping is in the southeast quadrant (CPAT, 1987). It was excavated in about 1860 (PRN 39915), which revealed a cist with bones (RCAHM, 1911). It is sited on a local summit. See also PRN 6163. It was formerly scheduled in error as SAM Mg067.

It is located on unimproved moorland and consists of a circle of large stones with smaller boulders inside and in between the larger stones. These all stand on top of an enclosure c.15.0m north-south. The cairn is very disturbed and inside is a hollow c.1.0m deep on the northeast side. On the eastern side the existing large cairn stones have been augmented by the addition of other smaller stones upon and in between them, whilst on the southern side stones have been added to form a wind-break (Cadw, 1998)
