PRN 88733 - Ffrith Roman site, excavation 1893

NGR :- SJ28455535 (SJ25NE)
Unitary authority :- Flintshire
Community :- Llanfynydd
Prefered site type :- 19th century - Excavation (Event - )

Excavations by Prof. T McKenny Hughes and 3 men to try to determine the relationship of the Roman site to Offa's Dyke. They dug in the gardens behind cottages constructed 'close to the dyke' and studied heaps of rubbish 'cut by two streams'. Results were inconclusive (Davies, E, 1949, pp231).

It is assumed that the location of this digging was in the vicinity of the 1870 activity (PRN 38259) that was undertaken before the construction of cottages, but this is not definite. It appears that Offa's Dyke was actually on the opposite side of the High Street (Bapty, I, pers. comm., 2005).

The RCAHM volume suggests Prof. Hughes visited 'immediately following a discovery of objects in 1878' but no other evidence for this can be found and this may be a mistake or a misinterpretation of information in Hughes's original source (Archaeologia, vol53, 1893) (SPencer, J, pers. comm., 2005).
